DTF · DIRECT-TO-FILM
Personalization technique
DTF printing — the versatile technique.
DTF (Direct-to-Film): ink printed on film then heat-transferred. Any design, any colour, lasts 50+ washes.
How it works
How it works in 4 steps.
01
FILM PRINTING
The design is printed in mirror image on a PET film with CMYK + white inks.
02
HOT-MELT POWDER
An adhesive powder is applied and fixed by heating.
03
HEAT PRESS
The film is transferred onto the textile under a heat press (160°C / 15s).
04
FILM REMOVAL
The film is peeled off hot, leaving the design bonded to the fabric.
Advantages
- + Every colour available (CMYK + white).
- + Photorealistic designs and gradients possible.
- + Compatible with cotton, polyester, blends, dark or light fabrics.
- + Lasts 50+ washes at 40°C, ideal for intensive use.
Limitations
- − Slightly more noticeable feel than screen printing.
- − Less economical for very large runs (>1000 pcs).
- − Not suited to highly stretchy textiles.
Frequently asked questions
Is DTF suitable for all textiles?
Yes — cotton, polyester, blends, light and dark fabrics. Some limits on pure elastane.
How many washes does DTF withstand?
A minimum of 50 washes at 40°C. Tested up to 60°C in industrial washing.
How does the price compare to screen printing?
DTF is more cost-effective up to 500 pieces. Beyond that, screen printing is often cheaper for simple designs.
Turnaround for a DTF production run?
5 to 15 business days after design approval.
